Testing the names we carry

A touchstone is a dark stone once used to test gold. Rub the metal against it, and the streak tells you whether the thing is what it claims to be.

Every man lives from some answer to the question who am I? โ€” and most of the answers we live from were never examined. Some were given by God. Some were manufactured by us, assigned by wounds, or installed by the world. This drill trains you to tell the difference, the same way you test a thought at the door of the heart.

You will hear a man's statement about himself. Your task: name the question that exposes it โ€” or recognize that it holds.

This is not a scorecard, and it is not a mirror for judging your brothers. It is target practice for the watch. The only man whose counterfeits you are training to catch is you โ€” and the goal is not a score, but a clearer eye and a humbler heart. Nothing here is recorded.
  • 1 ยท The Audience Question Does it need witnesses to exist? A true identity survives silence and obscurity. If it collapses when nobody is watching, it was built on expression, not communion โ€” and beware: vainglory can wear even "the disciplined Orthodox man" as a costume.
  • 2 ยท The Repentance Question Does it permit repentance? Any account of the self in which turning from sin feels like self-betrayal is a forgery. The true self is the one repentance recovers, never the one it threatens.
  • 3 ยท The Passions Question Is it built from a desire or a wound? "It's just how I'm wired" is the passion filing for permanent residency. Desires and injuries describe your condition; they do not constitute your person.
  • 4 ยท The Gift Question Was it received from God, or manufactured? Baptism, sonship, the name spoken over you โ€” given. The counterfeit is self-assigned and always needs maintenance. Words spoken by a cruel voice were assigned too โ€” but not by the One with authority to name you.
  • 5 ยท The Communion Question Does it drive you into communion, or out of it? A true identity can sit under counsel and kneel at confession. An identity that must isolate you to survive is defending itself the way lies do.
Which question is the sharpest touchstone here?

The watch is over for now.

You were not drilling to get a grade. You were sharpening one reflex: when a name rises up and says this is who you are โ€” test it before you live from it. The counterfeit comes in wearing your own face, and it never announces itself.

Carry one sentence out of this, the one every other true name is held inside: I am a beloved son, learning to watch my Father and do what He does.
